The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, with French food and wine in association with Cottenham Twinning Association.

Our next Cottenham Community Cinema Film, in association with Cottenham Twinning Association, on Sunday 8th April will be “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”. This will be our first French film and second foreign language film we have brought you. Added to our normal fantastic licensed bar, there will be French wines and foods for you to sample.

This classic 1960s film is one of the many inspirations behind the massive box office success and multi-award-winning film La La Land, with it’s ascetic and musical style.

The story of the film:
Geneviève (Catherine Deneuve), a beautiful young Frenchwoman who works at a small-town boutique selling umbrellas, falls for dashing mechanic Guy (Nino Castelnuovo). Their brief romance is interrupted when Guy is drafted to serve in the Algerian War. Though pregnant by Guy, Geneviève marries an older businessman, Roland (Marc Michel), and begins to move on with her life. Throughout the musical film, all the characters’ dialogue is conveyed through song.
